Shipping label prints sideways on a Mac: two causes that look identical

A label comes out of the printer lying on its side, or running off the edge of the roll. There are two entirely different causes, they produce almost the same result, and the fix for one makes the other worse.

So the first move is not a setting. It is finding out which one you have.

Tell them apart first

Open the PDF in Preview and press Cmd+I. Read the page size:

• 100 × 150 mm, or 4 × 6 in — the file is label-sized and the artwork inside it is rotated. This is a genuine rotation problem. Case A below.
• 210 × 297 mm, or 8.5 × 11 in — the file is a full page and the label is simply laid out horizontally on it. Nothing is rotated. Case B below.

That distinction is the whole guide. Almost every answer online covers Case A, which is why the advice so often does nothing.

Case A: the label really is rotated

The page is the right size and the printer is behaving; the artwork was written onto the page at ninety degrees. Some carriers generate labels this way, and some do it only for particular services, which is why it can start happening to a shop that had been fine for months.

Two ways to fix it, and they are not equivalent:

1. Rotate the file. In Preview, Cmd+R to rotate, Cmd+S to save, then print at 100%. The file is now correct for anything you send it to.
2. Rotate at the printer. Set orientation in the print dialog under Show Details, or turn on the driver's own rotation if it has one. Faster, but it corrects only this print.

Do not do both. Two rotations of ninety degrees is a hundred and eighty, and you get an upside-down label — which reads as a fresh, unrelated fault and sends people back to the driver looking for something that was never wrong.

The same applies to a saved printer preset. If you once set landscape to fix a batch and saved it, that preset keeps rotating everything afterwards, including the files that arrive correct.

Case B: the page is full-size and the label lies across the top

Here nothing is rotated. You have a Letter or A4 page with a label printed horizontally on part of it, usually the top half. That layout exists on purpose: it is meant to be printed on office paper, folded along the crease and taped to the parcel.

Send it to a 4x6 roll and the printer does the only thing it can — fits the whole page onto the label. The result is small, sideways, or both.

Setting landscape does not help. It rotates the entire page, so you get the same over-shrunk content in a different orientation. The label has to be taken out of the page at full size, not turned round.

eBay is the one sellers hit most: its Letter format puts the label sideways near the top of the page, and there is a 4x6 option elsewhere in the flow that produces an upright label directly.

Worth knowing about this case: cutting the label out is only half of it. A label that lay horizontally on the page is still horizontal once cropped, so it needs a quarter turn as well before it will print upright on a roll. When it started suddenly

A setup that worked for months and then changed overnight is almost never the Mac. Two things move underneath you:

• The marketplace changed its PDF. This happens, it is announced rarely, and it shows up as every label suddenly printing differently on the same unchanged printer.
• A macOS update reset the printer. Paper size and orientation fall back to defaults, and a default of Letter on a 4x6 roll produces exactly this.

Check the PDF first in both cases. If the file changed shape, no printer setting is going to be the answer.

If it prints sideways and cut off

Rotated and clipped at one edge is usually Case B plus a paper size mismatch — the page is being fitted to a label size that does not match the roll actually loaded, so part of it falls outside the printable area.

Set the paper size to match the roll, which is worth knowing precisely, then deal with the page shape. Fixing the clipping without fixing the shape just gives you a complete label at the wrong size.
