Which one to use
- One label, on a Mac: Preview. Nothing to install or trust, and the result is exact. Select the label, press
Cmd+K, print at 100%. - One label, any computer, quickly: a browser tool that works locally — ours or label4x6.com. Both find the label for you. Ours keeps the original vector content; label4x6 outputs an image of the label.
- On Windows without a new tool:Acrobat Reader's snapshot, then print the selected graphic.
- Label carries an address you would rather not upload: avoid the tools that process on a server. The table says which.
Before cropping: can you get 4x6 at the source?
The cleanest crop is the one you never do. Pirate Ship offers 4x6 directly, and its UPS labels only come in that size. Etsy formats USPS labels for 4x6 printers (other carriers arrive as a page). Poshmark and Mercari have a 4x6 paper-size setting. eBay's label purchase supports printing on a label printer as well as a home printer. Cropping is for what remains: most return labels, Vinted, DHL eCommerce and many carriers' own sites.
The one method to avoid
Printing the whole page with Fit or Scale to fit. It is the default in most print dialogs, needs no tool, and shrinks an A4 page — barcode included — to about 48% on a 4x6 label. That is the usual reason a barcode will not scan at the drop-off.
When a free tool stops being enough
All of these are one label, one crop at a time. When the same layout arrives twenty times a day, the repetition is the cost. Do free label crop tools upload my label?
Some do. LabelChop's web version and Q Crop Label process files on their servers, according to their own privacy policies. Our cropper, label4x6.com and Parcel Toolkit run in the browser. A shipping label carries a name and home address, so it is worth checking before you drop one in.
Does cropping a label reduce barcode quality?
It depends on how the tool crops. Changing the page boundary keeps the original vector barcode. Rendering the label as an image and placing that on a 4x6 page can soften it slightly, and scaling a whole A4 page down to 4x6 shrinks the barcode to about half size, which is the one approach that reliably causes scan failures.
