Xprinter on a Mac: model numbers, Bluetooth and emulation modes
Xprinter is the hardest of the common thermal printers to write a single guide for, and the reason is worth understanding before you start troubleshooting: Xprinter is not one printer. It is dozens of model families, sold under its own name and rebadged under many others, with driver packages that are not interchangeable between them.
Most Xprinter trouble on a Mac traces back to that. The steps are ordinary; picking the right thing to install is where it goes wrong.
Step 1: find your actual model number
Read it off the sticker on the printer itself, not from the Amazon listing and not from the box. Rebadged units are common, and the seller name frequently has nothing to do with the driver you need.
Then take the macOS driver for that family from Xprinter directly. Installing a package meant for a neighbouring family does not usually produce a clear error — it fails to initialise, or it installs and then prints nonsense, which sends people looking in entirely the wrong place.
Step 2: install, then add the printer
Run the installer, authenticate, then open System Settings → Printers & Scanners and add the device. That order matters: macOS lists a device once there is a driver to pair it with.
If macOS blocks the installer, that is Gatekeeper rather than a broken download. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, find the line naming the blocked installer, and click Open Anyway. The same step is needed for MUNBYN and most other vendor drivers.
Set the default paper size to 4 × 6 or 100 × 150 mm while you are in there, so documents that do not state their own size do not fall back to Letter.
Bluetooth, if you are using it
Xprinter uses classic Bluetooth SPP — the serial profile — rather than BLE. Practically, that means it pairs through the ordinary Bluetooth panel and behaves like a serial device once connected.
- Turn Bluetooth on at the printer and on the Mac.
- Add the device from the Bluetooth panel.
- If a pairing code is requested, it is normally
0000or1234.
Pairing failures are usually one of two things: the wrong PIN, or the printer dropping out of pairing mode before you finish. Put it back into pairing mode and start again rather than assuming the printer is faulty.
For batches, prefer USB. A serial link is slower than it sounds, and a run of fifty labels is where that becomes obvious.
Emulation modes: the cause of garbled labels
This is the Xprinter-specific problem and it looks alarming: pages of stray characters, mirrored output, labels that come out as text.
These printers can speak several label languages — TSPL, EPL, DPL, ZPL. The printer is set to expect one. The driver sends another. Neither side reports an error; you just get nonsense, because the printer is faithfully interpreting instructions written in a language it does not speak.
The fix is to make the two agree, and it is the printer's emulation setting you change, not anything about the label. Which matters because everything on screen will look correct while this is wrong.
When the printer is fine and the label still isn't
Once it prints cleanly, remaining size problems are not about the printer at all. Check the PDF with Cmd+I in Preview:
- 100 × 150 mm — the file is right, so set paper size to 4x6 and scale to 100% in the print dialog.
- 210 × 297 mm or 8.5 × 11 in — the label is a small rectangle on a full page, and no print setting fixes that. Cut it out of the page first.

Is a cheap Xprinter worth it?
Honestly, yes, with one caveat. The hardware in this class prints 4x6 labels perfectly well and costs a fraction of the branded alternatives. What you give up is the setup being smooth: the model sprawl, the driver matching and the emulation modes are all friction that a Rollo simply does not have, because it needs no driver at all.
